Loren Charles Smith, age 88 of Gainesville, passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at his residence and joined the Church Triumphant following a brief illness.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, June 28, 2014 at 11:00 am at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Reverend David Sieg will officiate. The family will receive friends on Friday, June 27, 2014 from 3 - 5 pm and 6 - 8 pm at the funeral home.
Loren was born February 15, 1926 in Dryden, Michigan to the late Charles Arthur Smith and Mabel Estelle (Lawrence) Smith. He attended school at General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan and the University of Michigan. Loren worked in the field of engineering at Wyandotte Chemicals (Wyandotte, Michigan), Airco (Union, New Jersey), Concoa (Virginia Beach, Virginia) and most recently at Harris Calorific, a division of Lincoln Electric (Gainesville, Georgia). He was one of those fortunate men who loved his work. His engineering career spanned over 6 decades and he continued to work until age 83. He also served in WW II in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 53 years, Eunice Merle Rau Smith and his sons, Riechard Joseph Smith and Hans Arthur Smith.
Mr. Smith is survived by his children, Lili Smith and Otto Smith, both of Gainesville, son & daughter-in-law, Michael & Julie Smith of Honolulu, Hawaii, daughter & son-in-law, Heidi & Ken Chinnock of Woodstock, Georgia, grandsons, Grant Haicl of Chapel Hill, North Carolina and Chris & Carolyn Haicl of New York, New York. He also has a brother & sister-in-law, Leslie & Dorothy Smith of Clinton Township, Michigan.
