Peggy Bernice Snow Robinson

Obituary Date: Wednesday, May 21, 2014
Peggy Bernice Snow Robinson of Gainesville, Georgia passed away on Wednesday, May 21st, at Morningside Assisted Living Facility. Peggy was brought into this world on May 27, 1926; thus, she passed away one week before her 88th birthday.

Peggy was the wife of Gaines Stallard Robinson for 63 years; Mr. Robinson preceded her in death by 8 years. Peggy died peacefully in the grace and company of all five of their children, who were at her bedside.

Peggy was born in Detroit, Michigan; however, she was not destined to remain there for very long. Throughout her youth, she lived the lifestyle of a nomad, traveling around the country with her father as he built beautiful homes and furniture. Despite her migrant status, as she grew older, Peggy had a full time job and attended school. Upon high school graduation, fated with the duty to leave her mark upon our nation's history, Peggy left her job at the dime store counter to become one of the United States' cultural icons, Rosie the Riveter, during World War II.

Peggy's job as a "Rosie" involved making guns and ammunition for the soldiers of WWII. Peggy worked this physically demanding job right next to her best friend. It was this job that enriched her life past her travel experiences and moved her toward her next venture in life. This job now also provides her family with a heritage of pride and dignity to know that this amazing woman, our family matriarch, contributed to women everywhere as she represented the symbolic and social movement of equality for women. Even though she may not have known it at the time, her job not only leaves us in awe of her today, but also was the path towards her future husband. During her job time as a "Rosie," Peggy was introduced to her friend's brother, a decorated soldier who had survived capture by the enemy during wartime. This heroic, handsome soldier had been held as a prisoner of war until he escaped and finally made it back to the United States, years later.

It was this young soldier that married Peggy, and after their marriage, moved to Gainesville, Georgia in order for her husband to build the bridges for what later became Lake Lanier. Meanwhile, Peggy continued to work, making meals to feed the steel workers.

Together, they went on to raise their 5 biological children. However, they did not stop there. After the nest was empty, Peggy brought into the home foster children, all with special needs. She raised these children over the course of the next 20 years, while simultaneously attending nursing school in order to become a nurse.

After Peggy retired from her nursing career, she ran the Hall County Farmers market for 20 years, until she reached the age of 85.

Peggy is survived by son, Butch Robinson and his wife Dianne, son, Ken Robinson and his wife Annette, daughter, Deb Bailey, daughter, Cindy Edwards and husband Chris and daughter, Melissa Owens and husband Roger. Grandchildren, Dawn and husband Billy Reed, grandson, Gaines Robinson, granddaughter, Kelley Reeves, grandson Ryan Edwards and granddaughter, Ashley Edwards. Great grandchildren Jordan Robinson, Chazz Reed and Tripp Reeves.

The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the staff of Morningside Assisted Living and the Northeast Georgia Medial Center Hospice for their kind and compassionate care and a special thanks to Margie Patrick for her devoted attention in her last days.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to YoungLife Windy Gap 110 Coles Cove Rd Weaverville NC 28787.
