John C. "J.C." Cannon

Alexander Funeral Home of Cleveland announces the death of Mr. John Carter "J.C." Cannon, age 93 of Cleveland who passed away Monday, March 24, 2014 following a period of declining health. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 AM, Thursday, March 27, 2014 in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Richard Long and Rev. Mike Borchert officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Pleasant United Methodist Church Cemetery. Mr. Cannon was born in Lumpkin County on April 19, 1920 to the late Oscar Cannon and Fairy Cain Cannon. He spent his early years in Lumpkin County graduating from Lumpkin County High School in Dahlonega, GA. After his years of service in the Military during WWII, he returned to school at North Georgia College in Dahlonega, GA. There he earned a Degree in Education and later went to earn a Master's Degree at the University of Georgia. He retired after teaching science and math for 30 years in teh White County School System. Mr. Cannon was a member of Retired Teachers of Georgia, Yonah Lodge #383 F&AM and the American Ex-Prisoners of War. He was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. Mr. Cannon entered military service on February 27, 1942 and was discharged on October 5, 1945 as a T-Sgt with many medals , including two Purple Hearts. After being captured and walking approximately 300 miles, he arrived at the infamous Stalag 17 in Krems, Austria. He spent approximately two years in prison before being liberated May 8, 1945.

In addtion to his parents, Mr. Cannon is preceded in death by his sisters, Helen Cannon, Alam Reese and Sue Perez as well as his brother, Dean Cannon.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Jessie Allen Cannon of Cleveland, Son, Mark Cannon, of Cleveland, son and daughter in law, Alan and Mary Ann Cannon of Athens; grandchildren include Matthew R. and Laura E. Cannon also of Athens; brother, Pat Cannon of Norcross; sisters, Barbara Matthews of Bethesda, MD. and Jean McCall of Columbia, S.C..

He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather and will be deeply missed by is family and friends. The family will recieve friends at the funeral home on Wednesday from 6 to 8pm
