Cheryl Bruce Hinderscheid

Obituary Date: Friday, November 29, 2013
Funeral services for Cheryl Bruce Hinderscheid, 66, will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Monday December 2, 2013 at Grace Episcopal Church in Gainesville with the Rev. Mike McCann officiating. Interment will be at Alta Vista Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday December 1, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.at Little and Davenport Funeral Home.



Born in Gainesville, Cheryl graduated from Gainesville High School, attended Brenau College, and graduated with a degree in education from the University of Southwestern Louisiana. For a number of years she pursued a career in education, but her real passion was in tending to her family and her community. Cheryl took an active interest in the lives of her children and through them the activities they were involved with. If there was an event at the school, most likely she had a hand in making it a success. Several years ago the concession stand in the school gymnasium was named in honor was named in honor of her and her late husband, Bill Hinderscheid. She was a fixture at most sporting events at Lakeview and helped start and coach the school's tennis team. Her love of tennis could also be seen on the courts as she played in a local tennis league.



Mrs. Hinderscheid's love of gardening is also on display in the community. She served in various positions, including president of the Crabapple Garden Club, and helped start a junior garden club at Enota Elementary. She was also a member of the Gainesville Garden Club council and an advocate for a city-wide beautification program, the enhancement and beautification of Gainesville's public parks and supportive of the Adopt-a-park-program.



The garden area in from of the Gainesville Civic Center was a creation of Mrs. Hinderscheid and combined with two of her passions, gardening and the Gainesville Parks & Recreation program where she served on the board from 1987 until her death. She served in various capacities on the Park & Recreation Board, including chairman on two different occasions; and, attended her last board meeting when the board convened at her home during the time of her illness. She was honored for her dedication and service to the Gainesville Park & Recreation with the 2003 Georgia Recreation & Park Association Volunteer of the Year award. In 2006 the City of Gainesville recognized her service with an Outstanding Citizen Award.



When it was announced that the 1996 Olympics would be held on Lake Lanier, Mrs. Hinderscheid once again stepped forward to head the massive undertaking of coordinating volunteers who would help make the 1996 Rowing and Spring Canoe/Kayaking Olympic Championships such a success. When the 2003 World Canoe/Kayak Championships came to the Lake Lanier Olympic venue, she again stepped forth and served as the vendor coordinator for the event. When the Georgia Special Olympics were held in Gainesville in 2002, she was a volunteer in those games as well.



Mrs. Hinderscheid contributed her talents and boundless energy to numerous other organizations, including the Hall County Humane Society, the Junior League, Campfire Boys & Girls and to Cub Scouts.



Her loving family proudly can see Mrs. Hinderscheid's presence throughout this community. She was preceded in death by her father, Alton Bruce and her husband, Bill Hinderscheid.



She is survived by her mother Bernice Bruce and her three children: Robin McEver and her husband, Russ, and their two children CJ Talley and Olivia McEver; Denise Wilkins and her husband, Jimbo, and their children Millie Wilkins and Alice Wilkins; and her son, Trey Hinderscheid. Mrs. Hinderscheid is also survived by her sisters, Charlotte Castleberry and her husband, Frank Castleberry; and Cindy Bryant and her husband, David Bryant, and by her brother Randy Bruce and his wife Ramona Bruce, She has a number of loving nieces, nephews, cousins and close family friends that Mrs. Hinderscheid treasured.
