Ray Dean Mauney, Sr. 78 of Gainesville passed away on November 27, 2013 after a 2 year battle with cancer. Born in Cherryville NC on October 3, 1935 Ray was the son of the late Floyd and Mona B. Mauney.
He graduated from Cherryville High School in 1953 and attended Wake Forest University on a baseball scholarship. In 1957 he graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma PI an Honorary Business Fraternity. After Graduation he enlisted in the United States Army and served his country 6 months of active duty and five and a half years of reserves.
A resident of Gainesville for over 50 years, Mr. Mauney worked as a controller and general manager for Mansfield Oil Co. for a number of years. In 1980 he served as Vice President and Chief Financial Officer for Mr. B's in Winder, Ga., a position he held until his retirement in 1990. A member of the First Baptist Church in Gainesville he was very active with the Gainesville Lions Club, The Elks Club, Chattahoochee Country Club, and the Paul E. Bolding Post # 7 of The American Legion.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Marianna Houser Mauney of Gainesville, son and daughter in law, Ray D Mauney, Jr., and Lisa of Clermont and their daughter Lauren; daughter and son in law, Melissa and Klay Simpson of Johns Creek and their sons, KJ and Carter Simpson; sister and brother in law, Marie and John Nestlerode of Cherryville, NC; brother and sister in law, Joel and Joan Mauney of Shelby NC; sister in law, Eloise Mauney of Cherryville NC; a very special "MeMe" Evelyn Haynes Kephart and a number of nieces and nephews.
Mr. Mauney is preceded in death by a son, William Nelson Mauney; sister, Ruth Mauney and 2 brothers Harold and Robert Mauney.
Memorial services will be held Thursday, December 5, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of the First Baptist Church on Green Street. Dr. Bill Coates will officiate. The family will receive friends in the Church Parlor following the service.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday December 14, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Shady Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Cherryville, North Carolina. The family will also receive friends after the service at the church.
