Robert Hendley Lowe Sr., age 74, of Gainesville, passed away on October 27, 2013.
Bob was born on July 19, 1939 in Athens and was the son of the late Vearl and Bonnie Major Lowe. He was preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Yarbrough Lowe, son Robert Hendley Lowe Jr., grand-dog Jack and siblings Doris Lowe Harden, Mildred Lowe Goodrich, and Charles Lowe.
Bob attended Winterville High School and graduated from Athens High in 1957. He attended the University of Georgia, obtaining a bachelor's degree in agriculture in 1962 and a master's of avian genetics in 1969. He enjoyed a career in nutritional and genetic research at The University of Georgia Poultry Research Center before joining the University of Georgia Cooperative Extension Service in 1970. He served in Banks, Stephens and Hall counties for 22 years until retirement in 1992.
Bob had a gift for woodworking and made many toys for his beloved grandchildren. He was also a master gardener who cultivated fruits, vegetables and flowers, and he delighted in sharing them with friends and family. He had a quick wit and a big heart, and he never let his children forget who loved them.
He was a member of Gainesville First United Methodist Church and the Aldersgate Sunday School class. He also belonged to the Georgia and National Associations of Agricultural County Agents and Epsilon Sigma Phi.
He is survived by his daughter Leigh Anne Lowe Landers of Athens, grandchildren Sarah Hendley Landers and James Lawson Landers, former son-in-law James Steven Landers, brothers and sisters-in-law Linda Daniel, Wayne (Sharon) Yarbrough, and Terry (Anne) Yarbrough. Numerous nieces and nephews also loved and remember Bob.
His daughter, Leigh Anne, would like to express her gratitude to Athens Neurological Associates, Arbor Terrace of Athens and St. Mary's Hospice House for their care, attention and support for Bob as well as his family.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at 11:00, Gainesville First United Methodist Church, with Dr. Terry Walton officiating. Interment will follow the celebration of his life at Tuckston United Methodist Church, Athens at 3:00.
The Family will receive friends at Little-Davenport Funeral Home, Gainesville on Tuesday, October 29, 5:00-7:00.
