Shirley Barker Smith

Obituary Date: Sunday, October 20, 2013

Shirley Barker Smith, age 74 of Suwanee, GA passed away on Sunday, October 20, 2013 due to complications from lymphoma. The second youngest of 8 children, she was born on February 14, 1939 in Duluth, Georgia. She graduated as Valedictorian of Duluth High School in 1956 and then went on to attend Young Harris College and graduate in 1958 with an Associate Degree in Art. Her passion and gift was music and singing. She sang in many choirs and was asked to perform solos in church, weddings, and for special occasions.
Her true joy in life came from her two daughters and 5 grandchildren: Daughter, Stacie Smith Shull and son-in- law, Adam, Grandchildren, Sydney, Steele and Sallie Shull; Daughter, Stephanie Smith Wright and son-in-law, Jay, Grandsons Jarrett and Tyler Wright. Her family was her greatest accomplishment and source of pride. "Gram" will be always hold a special place in the hearts of her grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eldridge and Cora Barker; brothers , Ivan, Hillian, Darnell, Edwin, and Bobby Barker. She is survived by her brother, LE Barker and sister-in-law Betty, Hartwell, GA; sister, Lena Nash and brother-in-law Cecil, Duluth, GA; sister-in-laws; Francis Barker, Duluth, GA ; Barbara Barker Jones, Gainesville, GA; Bonnie Barker, Buford, GA; and many beloved nieces and nephews.
She retired from Georgia Pacific in 2001 and shortly after began substitute teaching in Gwinnett County. She loved teaching and treasured the relationships she fostered with the faculty and students, especially those at Berkeley Lake Elementary.
She was a member of Johns Creek Baptist Church and former member of the Sanctuary Choir at JCBC.
Funeral services will be held at Johns Creek Baptist Church on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 2pm. The Rev. Shaun King and Rev. David White will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions in the memory of Shirley Smith to Johns Creek Baptist Church or Peachtree Christian Hospice in Duluth, GA
