Mr. James G. Humphrey, Sr., (Jim) (Paw Paw) passed away October 19, 2013 at the Oaks at Limestone, after a long battle with Alzheimer's.
Funeral services are planned for Wednesday, October 23, 2013 in the Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Reverend Steve Fenlon will officiate. The family will receive friends Monday, October 21, 2013 and Tuesday, October 22, 2013 from 5:00pm-8:00pm.
Mr. Humphrey was born in Cumming, Georgia on August 28, 1924 but lived most of his life in Atlanta and Forest Park until 1981 when he moved to Lake Lanier in Gainesville. He loved to fish and tend to his many flower and vegetable gardens and to his dogs.
God blessed his family when he chose his to be their father, father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather. The name Paw Paw is what they called him and forever he will be remembered as a strong loving man.
He served our country in the United States Navy from 1942-1944 during WW II. While he was in the service he was in the military police. He was employed by the then Tom Mitchell Buick in Buckhead in 1949. The dealership was sold to Bill Davidson and moved to Alpharetta and in 1997 Mr. Humphrey retired after 49 years of service with the same dealership.
Mr. Humphrey was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Humphrey. His mother, Irene Vaughn Humphrey and brothers Nathaniel and Everett Humphrey.
Mr. Humphrey is survived by his 5 children, son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Gail Humphrey, Atlanta, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Terry and Cindy Humphrey, Gillsville, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Hollis Hodge, Concord, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne Flowers and Larry Copeland, Jonesboro, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy and Elise Humphrey, Gainesville, GA. Mr. Humphrey is also survived by 8 grandchildren: Andy and Shannon Humphrey, Concord, GA; Adam and Amy Humphrey, McDonough, GA; Jennifer Humphrey, Gillsville, GA; Terry (TJ) and Teena Humphrey, Gainesville, GA; Jessica Flowers and fiancé Denis Vasquez, Jonesboro, GA; Brittany and John Davenport, Gainesville; GA; Audrea Hodge, Atlanta. GA; Austin Hodge, Concord, GA; 15 great-grandchildren: Faith Humphrey, Mason Humphrey, Peyton Humphrey, Cole Humphrey, Kylie Humphrey, Tristan Humphrey, Eli Humphrey, Eric Gilman, Caden Gilman, Jayla Hodge, Jacoby Hodge, Zachary Flowers, Zoie Flowers, Hayleigh Davenport and Tyler Davenport. Niece Pamela and Aaron Jinks and Mark Mason. Special family friend Whitney Flannagan.
