Nelle Lathem Wallace

Nelle Lathem Wallace died peacefully in her home on October 7, 2013, following a courageous, year-long battle with cancer.

Born in 1931 to Charles Wesley Lathem and Ethel (Warren) Lathem, Nelle was the youngest and last-surviving grandchild of W. A. Lathem, a founder of Lathemtown, where she spent a happy childhood among siblings, cousins, and friends. At age 16 she eloped with a young veteran of World War II, George Smith Wallace, and in the next year the first of their three children was born. Nelle helped to start a successful business with her husband and also worked for many years at Allyn & Bacon Publishers. She retired from Northside Hospital in Atlanta, where she specialized in patient financial counseling. During retirement, and throughout her life, Nelle was a spirited, fun-loving, adventurous companion.

She is survived by her children Susan Wallace Boehmer and her husband, Clifford, of Cambridge, MA, Rita Wallace of Free Home Community in Cherokee County, GA, and Donald George Wallace and his wife, Elizabeth, of Lexington, VA; granddaughters Meghan Jean Wallace of Fredericton, NB, Canada, Karrina Chelsea Wallace of Portland, OR, and Kathryn Kim Boehmer of Cologne, Germany; grandsons Christopher Shin Boehmer and his wife, Krista McDonald, of Norwalk, CT, David Warren Doo and his wife, Amanda Dinsmore, of Denver, CO, and Jeremy Keith Doo of Stamford, CT; a great-grandson, Colby Jon Boehmer, of Norwalk, CT; and many other loving members of the extended Wallace and Lathem families.

Nelle regularly attended Macedonia Methodist Church near Holbrook Campground and will be buried in the cemetery of Orange Methodist Church in Lathemtown. A graveside service for friends and family will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 11, 2013.
