Mr. William Elonzo "Billy" Hood, Jr., age 77, of Gainesville, Georgia passed away on September 13, 2013 following an extended illness. A celebration of his life is planned for 2 PM Sunday, September 15, 2013 at the First Baptist Church, Gainesville, Georgia. Dr. William Coates will officiate the memorial service. The family will receive friends in the Banquet Hall following the service.
Born on February 29, 1936, Billy lived in Gainesville all of his life. He attended public school and graduated from Gainesville High School. He earned his BBA from the University of Georgia where he was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity. He owned Hood Furniture Company and later owned M & R Rentals until he retired in 2005.
A member of First Baptist Church, Billy joined Boy Scout Troop 26 where he was awarded his Eagle. He later served in the Georgia National Guard. He was elected to the Boards of Directors of the Chattahoochee Country Club, First Federal Savings and Loan, and Lakeview Academy. He served as Chairman of the Civil Service Board, a member of Kiwanis Club, Elks Club and Gainesville Jaycees.
Always known as a true "Southern Gentleman", he will be remembered for his loyalty to his friends, honesty in business, positive outlook and quick wit. Billy had a giving spirit, a passion for life, and he enriched the lives of those who knew him. He loved playing golf, riding his Harley Davidson and spending time at the farm in Nacoochee Valley.
Billy is survived by his wife, Polly Hood, son Hap Hood and his wife, Michele, Gainesville; son, Robert Hood and his wife Marcia, Gainesville; daughter Ansley and her husband, Weymon Forrester, Gainesville; stepson Jason Moore and his wife, Amanda, Gainesville; step daughter, Liz Hansen, Gainesville; sister Betty Ann Souter, Montezuma, Georgia; grandchildren Trey, William and Evelyn Forrester, Elizabeth, Maggie and Bill Hood, James, Brooklyne and Lauren Wassel, Trey Davenport, Fowler Moore, Smith and Polly Hansen.
Billy was predeceased by his parents William and Sara Hood and his wife, Peggy L. Hood.
