Evangeline Loraine Angel Whitley

Evangeline Loraine Angel Whitley (previously known as Angie Hebbeler), 86, of Gainesville, Georgia passed away Thursday, September 5, 2013 at home with her loving family, following prolonged complications after multiple bouts of cancer.

Born in Cairo, KY, and a Henderson High School graduate, she was a student nurse in the Army Nursing Corps where she was a 1st Lieutenant at the close of World War II. She held a Bachelor of Nursing from University of Evansville, Master of Public Health Administration from University of Michigan, and a Doctorate in Higher Health Education from Florida State University. Worked 15 years as a registered nurse at Deaconess Hospital and school nurse in Evansville, IN; 1962, became Vanderburgh County's Tuberculosis Control Officer; 1969, transitioned to Ohio Valley Regional Medical Program in Lexington, KY, where she rose to Chief Executive and University of Kentucky staff member; 1974, served on Kentucky Board of Higher Education in Frankfort, KY; 1982, selected to serve on the Southern Regional Education Board, Atlanta, GA; 1988, retired in Gainesville, GA.

Dedicated member of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church (UMC), taught adult Sunday school, active in United Methodist Women, and volunteered at many community service organizations. She enjoyed reading, gardening, traveling the world and spending time with her family.

Surviving are her husband of 27 years, Eugene Whitley of Gainesville, GA; daughters Annette Hebbeler of Lexington, KY; Elisabeth (Chuck) Leasure of Gainesville, GA and Marsha Hebbeler of Havana, FL; Joe (Cathy) Whitley of Albany, KY; Doug (Laurie) Whitley of Columbus OH; mother-in-law Geneva Whitley of Middletown, OH; daughter-in-law, Sally Hebbeler of Roanoke, IN; sister-in-laws Joann Grimes of Middletown, OH and Betty June Angel of Evansville, IN; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews of whom she adored.

Preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Lorena (Inkenbrandt) Angel; eight brothers and sisters (Edgar, Florence, Noble, Manson, Isabelle, Samuel Jr., Violet, and Clyde); son, Stanton Hebbeler; father-in-law, Paul Whitley; brother-in-law, Robert Grimes; and nieces, Marian Angel Elstner and Leann Davidge.
