Dan McClure McGill,

Obituary Date: Friday, August 30, 2013
Dan McClure McGill, 78, of Gainesville, GA passed away on Friday, August 30, 2013 at his residence. Born on March 31, 1935, in Anderson, SC he was the son of Norman and Vera. McGill.



Dan was a graduate of Clemson University earning both B.S. and M.S. Degrees in Agriculture engineering. He began his career in the field of civil engineering in 1960 with the USDA, Soil Conservation Service in Spartanburg, SC. In 1963, he located with the Soil Conservation Service to Carrollton, GA; later to Canton, GA and from 1965 to 1967 he was headquartered in Athens, GA. From 1967 to 1969 he was located in Gainesville, Ga. In 1969, he left the Soil Conservation Service to begin private practice in civil engineering. He continued the practice of engineering until 2001 at which time he retired from the firm of Schnabel Engineering in Alpharetta, Ga.



During his time in private practice of engineering, he was responsible for the design and construction management of hundreds of earth dams throughout the southeastern part of the U.S. as well as dams in Montana.



Dan was active in Lakewood Baptist Church in Gainesville and is a Lakewood Life Deacon. He taught Sunday school for 40 years, first as a teacher for young boys and for the past 30+ years has taught a couples class.



Dan was preceded in death by his father, Charles Norman McGill and mother, Vera McGill, a brother, James Norman McGill and a sister Martha Walters Coker.



He is survived by his wife, Margie S. McGill; sons and daughters in law, Dan McGill, Jr. and Lee Ann McGill, John Timothy McGill and Angie Shaw McGill; grandson, Cooper Andrew McGill; granddaughter, Cassidy Elizabeth McGill.


Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday September 1, 2013 at Lakewood Baptist Church. Dr. Tom Smiley and Dr. Jerry Gill will officiate. Interment will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Little & Davenport Funeral Home Saturday August 31, 2013 from 6-8 p.m.
