Winford L. Popphan

Winford Lewis Popphan, Sr., age 69, of Homer, Georgia, passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2013, at his residence.



Mr. Popphan was born on September 3, 1943, in Heard County, Georgia; son of the late Harrison Oliver and Lena Steele Popphan. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Barbara Popphan Daniel; brothers, Harlan and Terry Popphan; and sisters, Nancy Wilson, Caroline McKeown, and Brenda Popphan. Mr. Popphan was a retired United States Army Veteran with 20 years of service, having served during the Vietnam Conflict. He was also a retired Game Warden with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Mr. Popphan was a mason and member of Lula Masonic Lodge #152 F&A.M. He was a member of the V.F.W., the American Legion, and the Peace Officers Association of Georgia.



Survivors include his loving wife of 43 years, Elaine Echols Popphan, Homer, GA; son, Winford Lewis Popphan, Jr., Rome, GA; son and daughter-in-law, Lieutenant Colonel James H. Popphan and Tabitha, Honolulu, HI; son-in-law, David Daniel, LaGrange, GA; sister-in-law, Nellie M. Popphan, Carrollton, GA; brother and sister-in-law, John David and Sarah Popphan, Carrollton, GA; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wayne and Theresa Echols, Clarkesville, GA; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews.



A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, 2013, at Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel, Baldwin, Georgia, with a United States Army Chaplain officiating. Full military honors will be provided by the United States Army Honor Guard.



The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, July 26, 2013, at the funeral home.
