Major (Ret.) Richard E. Abercrombie

Obituary Date: Sunday, June 30, 2013




Major (Ret.) Richard E. Abercrombie, age 79 of Gainesville, passed away on Sunday, June 30, 2013 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a brief illness.


Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at 4:00 pm in the Chapel of Memorial Park Funeral Home with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Reverend Ralph Smith and Reverend Cotton Harris will officiate. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 2, 2013 from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 pm at the funeral home.

Mr. Abercrombie was born November 2, 1933 in Gainesville, Georgia to the late Fred Abercrombie and Estelle Wilson Abercrombie. He graduated from Officer Candidate School, retired from the U.S. Army and was a member of Gainesville Masonic Lodge. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Clifton Abercrombie and Ernest Abercrombie and granddaughter, Teri Abercrombie.

Mr. Abercrombie is survived by Elease Davis Abercrombie of Opelika, Alabama; brother, Donald Abercrombie of Gainesville; sons: Darl Abercrombie of San Antonio, Texas and Scotty Abercrombie of Lula; daughters: Lynn A. Sweeten and Joyce A. Burdette, both of Opelika, Alabama, grandsons: Lee Craft, Chris Craft, Jason Craft, all of Opelika, Alabama and Cale Abercrombie of Lula; granddaughters: Tracey Bandy of San Antonio, Texas and Tiffany Pollard Clay of Moody, Alabama; great-grandchildren: Carlee, Shelby and Brieanna Craft, Avery Craft, Tyler Coleman, Brody and Bryson Craft, all of Opelika, Alabama; Carter and Kelsey Bandy, both of San Antonio, Texas.
