Bart Taylor Toomey

Obituary Date: Sunday, June 9, 2013
Bart Taylor Toomey died Sunday, June 9th 2013 at Northeast Georgia's Medical Center surrounded by family.

Beloved husband, father and grandfather, Bart is survived by his wife, Rita; his daughter Brenda Kortekamp and her husband, Steve plus grandchildren: Alex, Nick and Brooke Kortekamp; daughter Carlynne Toomey plus grandchildren: Ryan, Kyle and Skye; step-daughter Candace Cole and her husband Robert (Bob) Cole plus grandchildren Bobby, Connor and Andrew Cole; step-daughter Nicole Hall and her husband Kelly plus grandchildren: Kristen, Justin and Sean Hall; and sister Marilyn Snyder.

Bart was born December 26, 1941 in Detroit, Michigan, and was the son of Taylor and Irma Toomey. He attended high school in Columbia City, Indiana and continued his education at Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana and Muskingum University in Ohio. While in high school, Bart met and dated Rita for three years; however, while both were attending different colleges, they drifted apart and ultimately married others. After not seeing each other for 30 years, they were reunited when Bart attended his high school reunion. December 27, 1990 Bart and Rita were married.

Bart started his working career as an auditor for GE where he traveled the world on the auditing staff visiting GE's different facilities. Eventually opportunities opened where he got out of the auditing end of the business and was a General Manager of Continental Can Company from 1978-1983. Then in 1983 he accepted a position with Diamond Match Company as President until 1987. 1988-1990 he was President of Paper Magic Group in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Bart ended his working career with Janesville Group Limited/Duratec Corporation in Janesville, Wisconsin, where he was President from 1991-1998. In 1998 Bart chose to accept early retirement.

Bart loved to travel and learn about different places. During his working career, he had many opportunities to travel to different countries for business reasons. Then once he retired, Bart and Rita continued to explore the world via either cruises (22 of them) or just flying someplace and staying in that area for a week or two while they did some exploring. Prior to health issues, Bart enjoyed playing golf and tennis. In 2006, Bart and Rita built a home in Gainesville, Georgia and have since then enjoyed the proximity to family plus their many friends.

Bart passed with several health related issues. He died peacefully surrounded by his wife Rita and their four daughters plus son-in-law Bob. Bart has chosen to be cremated and buried in the plot he and Rita bought in Columbia City, Indiana.
