Robert Mansfield Jennings

Dr. Robert Mansfield Jennings, died on May 31, 2013, at his home in Gainesville Georgia. He was the third son of Henry Smith and Lillian Juanita Cannon Jennings, born in Brunswick GA on October 4, 1927.

The family moved from Brunswick to Dawson, GA, where he graduated from high school. He attended the Citadel Military College in
Charleston, SC, prior to enlistment in the US Army, where he served in H Troop, 7th Regiment, 1st Calvary Division in
Japan. Upon returning to the States, he resumed his college career at Emory University where he was a member of Chi Phi Fraternity and graduated with a BA in biology in 1950. He subsequently attended Emory Dental School, was
a member of Xi Psi Phi Dental Fraternity, graduating with the DDS degree in 1954. Dr. Jennings accepted an appointment with the United States Naval Reserve Dental Corp, serving aboard the USS Randolph from 1954 to
1956. He was honorably discharged as a Lieutenant JG, USNR, in 1956 and moved to Gainesville, GA, to establish a
private dental practice. He married Betty (Sarah Elizabeth) Smith on July 16, 1959. Together they raised three
children in Gainesville.

Dr. Jennings was a member of the American Dental Association, the Georgia Dental Association, the Norther
District Dental Society, and the Hall County Dental Society where he held the offices of Secretary‐Treasurer, Parliamentarian, and President at various times. He was a charter member of the Hall County Dental Study Club. In
1960 he joined the Georgia Society of Dentistry for Children and was a charter member in the Georgia Academy of
Dental Practice. During his involvement with the Georgia Society of Dentistry for Children, he served as part of the Executive Council, Secretary‐Treasurer, Vice‐President, President, and Delegate to the American Society of
Dentistry for Children. He was a member of the Georgia Dental Service Corporation and a member of the Dentist's Advisory Committee to then‐Governor Jimmy Carter. Dr. Jennings joined the American Academy of General Dentistry in 1972. During his career, he was inducted as an Honorable Fellow of the Georgia Dental Association, a Fellow of the American College of Dentistry, a Fellow of the International College of Dentistry, and a Fellow of the
American Academy of General Practice. He was grateful to serve his patients in Gainesville for 36 years before
retiring from his practice in 1992.

Dr. Jennings was a faithful member of his church and active member of his community. After moving to Gainesville, he joined the Gainesville First United Methodist Church, where he served as a Sunday School teacher,
two terms as Chairman of the Administrative Board, and as a Trustee. He was active on the Building Committee at a crucial juncture for the church as they made decisions about purchasing land and building a new facility.

In 2006 Dr. Jennings joined Lakewood Baptist Church, where he remained a member until his death. He served on the Gainesville Board of Education for six years, including one year as Chairman and also served as President of the Gainesville Swim Association. He was a long‐time member of the Gainesville Rotary Club and the Chattahoochee
Country Club.

Dr. Jennings cherished his family, with whom he was very close and shared a lifetime of joy. He is survived by his wife Betty Jennings, children Harriet Jennings Shirley of Nashville, TN and Horace Smith Jennings of Asheville, NC, their spouses, and his grandchildren Matthew Christopher Meacham, Savannah Kate Swor, Finnigan Crawford
Shirley, and Riley Hardin Shirley of Nashville, TN, Robert Mansfield Jennings, III, and John Newman Jennings of Gainesville, GA, and Catherine Harriet Jennings of Asheville, NC. He is also survived by his brother, Henry Smith Jennings, Jr., of Gainesville, GA, and many cousins, nieces, nephews.

Dr. Jennings was preceded in death by his
parents, by his brother Joseph Cannon Jennings, and his son Robert Mansfield Jennings, Jr.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday June 8, 2013 at 11:00 A M at Lakewood Baptist Church Family will receive friends after the service at the church.
