Meryl H. Hollis, age 90, passed away on January 5th at her residence following a brief illness.
Mrs. Hollis was born on September 28, 1922 in Willie, (Liberty County) Georgia to James (Jim) and Exilee McGahee.
She moved to Dahlonega in 1947 with her family after having lived in the Atlanta area for a brief period. She was married to Joseph P. Hollis for forty-nine years. Joseph preceded her in death in 1989.
A devoted and loving mother, she is survived by her daughter, Carole H. Justus of Dahlonega; a son, Joseph P. Hollis, Jr of Alexandria, Virginia; and daughter, Susan H. Baker of Clarkston, Georgia.
In addition to her immediate family, she had 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
She devoted her life to teaching and helping the children of Dahlonega and Lumpkin County. For over 30 years she owned and managed the Dahlonega Kindergarten program, later serving as a Teacher's Assistant in the Lumpkin County Elementary School system.
She was a charter member of the "Scrougers" ladies group who oversaw the growth and friendship of a number of Dahlonega ladies involved in sharing and maintaining close personal relationships. Fellow "Scrougers" included: Jewell West, Connie King, Kit Sisk, Irene Maxwell, Jo Hause, Lucille Early, Mildred Jones, and Doris Kenimer.
A service celebrating her life will be held at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega on Thursday, January 10th at 2:00 PM.
Interment will follow in the Dahlonega Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at Banister Funeral Home in Dahlonega from 6 PM-8 PM on Wednesday, January 9th.
