Joe David Holcomb

Obituary Date: Saturday, December 29, 2012
Joe David Holcomb, 86, a lifetime resident of Chicopee Mill Village passed away at his home on Saturday, December 29, 2012.

He leaves his wife of 60 years, Carol Dean Holcomb; two daughters; Carol Denise Hall and husband, Jeffrey E. Hall of Albany, Georgia and Dale Holcomb Stone and husband Ken Stone of Franklin, Tennessee; a sister, Roberta Irvin, Lawrenceville; brother and sister-in-law; Larry and Martha Holcomb, Gainesville, granddaughters; Courtney Humes, Amber Herring and Brittany Cook and five great grandsons.

Joe is preceded in death by his sister, Doris Cook, and daughter, Dawn Holcomb Wilson.

Born and raised in Chicopee, Joe served in the United States Army during World War II and returned to marry Dean. He went to work for Chicopee Manufacturing Company, where he was employed for 39 years.

Joe lived a simple life. His life exhibited his belief of honor and integrity. He believed that your word was your bond and he lived by that creed. He survived a household of 4 women and had a keen sense of humor. He relished sharing his stories, jokes and peanut brittle with others.

For many years, Joe was an avid golfer and enjoyed walking the courses. He was a regular at Chicopee Woods. He served as treasurer for Chicopee United Methodist Church for many years. Joe served unofficially as the Chicopee Village historian.

He was a gentle and kind man who quietly helped others in need. He saw things to do and to get done and applied a do-it yourself approach. Joe was the one to call for fixing things, finding solutions or just rigging something to work.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday December 31, 2012 in the Little & Davenport Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Carrie Myers will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday December 31, 2012 from 12:30 p.m. until the funeral hour.
