Marian Elizabeth Ashford Romberg

Marian Elizabeth Ashford Romberg passed away on Friday, October 26, 2012 at NE Georgia Medical Center after a brief illness at age 99. She was a native Gainesvillian, born March 16, 1913, the daughter of the late Mellie Pitchford and George Hamm Ashford, Gainesville's mayor for 12 years. She graduated from Gainesville High School and attended Wesleyan College in Macon. Elizabeth was preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Conrad Julius Romberg, co-founder of City Ice Company and City Plumbing & Electric Supply, and by one son, Carl B. Romberg II.
As a lifelong member of the Gainesville First United Methodist Church, she gave faithful service to the Church Flower Guild, Needlepoint Guild, and United Methodist Women. She was a lifetime (78 years) member of the Col. William Candler Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution where she served as Chapter Regent. She was a descendent of Col. William Candler as well as Georgia's Governor Allen D. Candler, 1898-1902.
Elizabeth had a passion for beautiful garden flowers and enjoyed growing and arranging them for local events. She served as President of Floramor Garden Club and The Arts Study Club. She was a member of the Northeast Georgia History Center, The Quinlan Art Center, Stitch-In Sewing Club, the Dogwood Chapter of the Embroidery Guild of America, and the Chattahoochee Country Club.
Devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, Elizabeth loved and treasured her family. She is survived by one sister, Lillian Ashford Hudgins (97) of Gainesville; four children: George J. Romberg and Sandra, Caroline R. Silcox and Hal, Connie R. Thompson, all of Gainesville, John C. Romberg of Fort Lauderdale, FL., and daughter-in-law Betty N. Romberg of Gainesville; eight grandchildren: Jane Romberg Chance of Singapore, Beth Silcox Maentz of Winnetka, IL, Dr. D. Hal Silcox III of Atlanta, Lee Ann Romberg White of Cumming, Carl B. Romberg III and Christopher M. Romberg, both of Gainesville, Susan Thompson Hebert of Gainesville, Cheryl Thompson Crawford of Franklin, TN; and nine great grandchildren.
The family wants to extend special thanks to Mary (Evie) Sotack and Gail Simon who have lovingly cared for our Mother in recent times.
A memorial service will be held at Gainesville First United Methodist Church, 2780 Thompson Bridge Road, Gainesville, GA, 30506 on Wednesday, Oct. 31 at 2:00 pm.The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Gathering room. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Meals-on-Wheels, 430 Prior Street, SE, Gainesville, GA, 30501, or to the Gainesville First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.
