Douglas Kirkpatrick Smith

Obituary Date: Sunday, October 21, 2012

Douglas Kirkpatrick Smith of Cumming, GA died on October 21, 2012. He was born in Webster Grove, MO on January 5, 1923, the son of the late Dallas and Louise Kirkpatrick Smith.

He graduated from Purdue University with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity. He served in World War II as an Artillery Officer in the CBI. After completing his education he moved to Atlanta where he served as VP in charge of advertising and public relations at the First National Bank.

He was a volunteer with the Atlanta Boy Scout Council which presented him with the Silver Beaver Award. He was a member of Trinity Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder. For the past forty years, he has been a resident of Cumming, GA where he renovated and lived in Burruss Mill. In Cumming, he became a member of the Deer Creek Shores Presbyterian Church, the Rotary Club and the Historical Society. He served a term on the Board of The Place, a social service organization, the Board of the Lake Lanier Association and served a term as President of the Atlanta Freight Bureau.

He is survived by his son, R. Gray Smith and daughter-in-law Kelley Smith; cousin Nancy Louise Swearingen; sister-in-law, Mrs. Richard A. Smith; and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Jane Wilcox Smith; son, Douglas Kirkpatrick Smith, Jr.; and brother, Richard Allen Smith.

Mr. Smith's son and daughter-in-law wish to thank Janice Davis and the caregivers of Stay at Home of NE Georgia and Mr. Fred Youngman and staff of Gracemont Assisted Living. These kind people helped make the last part of Mr. Smith's life much more comfortable.

Services will be held at Deer Creek Shores Presbyterian Church, Saturday, October 27, 2012 at 11:00 am and the family will receive visitors after the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Deer Creek Shores Presbyterian Church, 7620 Lanier Drive, Cumming, GA 3004.
