Vincent Arthur McCusker

Obituary Date: Tuesday, October 9, 2012

Vincent "Mac" McCusker, 92, joined his wife of 67 years, Margaret Lucy, in everlasting peace, on October 9, 2012. Vincent was born April 27, 1920 in Dunbar, Fayette County, PA where he attended St. Aloysius Catholic Church and was a 1937 graduate of Immaculate Conception High School in Dunbar. He was also a devout member of Sacred Heart (Savannah), Our Lady of Lourdes (Port Wentworth), St. Michael's Catholic Church (Tybee Island), and St. Paul the Apostle (Cleveland, GA), which will be his final resting place.

In 1937, Vince started working at Lazy Hour Ranch as a horse jumper, a hobby he enjoyed for many years later, including membership in the 7 Bar D Riding Club. In 1939, Vince left Pennsylvania and started with Union Bag and Paper Co (Union Camp), from where he would retire as the General Maintenance Manager with 42 years of service. Vince joined the Navy from 1941-1945 and retired from the Naval Reserves as Senior Chief with over 23 years of service. Vince also volunteered over 50 years of service to the fire department and in 1960, was a charter member of the 7th District Fire Dept. He moved to Tybee Island where he retired as Fire Chief and was honored in 2003 when the first ladder truck for the city, Ladder 5, was dedicated to Chief McCusker. Vince also volunteered thousands of hours and miles as a courier and was eventually employed and retired from the American Red Cross.

Vince was a true NASCAR fan, loved Dolly Pardon, the ocean, horses, square dancing, animals, especially his dog "Bear", his family, the $2 store and the Cleveland hardware store, Piggly Wiggly, and making his grandchildren smile with YooHoos, gum, and crackers. He never threw anything away-everything had a purpose.

Vincent was preceded in death by his wife Lucy; his children Paul, Michael, and Patricia; parents Margaret and Arthur; and siblings John, Eddie, Cecile, Mary, Peggy, and Elizabeth. He is survived by his sister JoAnn, six children Doug (Ella), Eddie (Virginia), Terri, Gerri (Brian), Kevin, Andy (Nancy) and daughter-in-law Linda; 18 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 2.5 great-great grandchildren.
