Prentiss McIntyre Hosford age 94, educational psychologist, died August 29, 2012.
Born in Calhoun, Georgia in January, 1918, she spent much of her life in Atlanta and raised her family there with her beloved husband, James C. Hosford. She was a member for many years at Peachtree Christian Church, where she served as a Deacon and Elder. More recently she has attended First Presbyterian Church in Gainesville, GA, where she moved after retirement in 2001.
After graduation from Girls High School and Georgia State, Prentiss worked for AT&T and the Red Cross. She first taught near Macon, then for the Atlanta Public Schools, primarily at Spring Street School. Prentiss transferred to the Psychological Services Division and pursued Master's and Doctoral level degrees at the University of Georgia. Under the auspices of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, she prepared a proposal which was in strumental in obtaining a substantial Ford Foundation grant for the Atlantas schools to form a plan to intervene on behalf of disadvantaged inner-city children. In the 1970's Prentiss taught as an Associate Professor at the University of Georgia. After a brief return to the Atlanta Public Schools, she migrated to the private sector. providing assistance for children and adolescents. She served three terms on the State Board of Examiners of Psychologists. Dr. Hosford also taught as a Professor at Brenau College in Gainesville, Georgia.
After retiring Prentiss moved to Lanier Village Estates in Gainesville, where she maintained her active lifestyle, making new friends and seeking new adventures. Recently she has resided in the Oakbridge Terrace and Willowbrook communities. She made many new friends at LVE among the residents, and also among the staff members who were so kind to her and helped in her care.
Prentiss was predeceased by her husband of more than 50 years, James C. Hosford, and her beloved son Dr. James Michael Hosford. She is survived by Susan Smith Hosford, and by Mike and Susie's children Jennifer Johannesmeyer, Abigail Cutchshaw, and Rebecca Roberts, and their husbands Jack, Adrian and Madison. She is also survived by her son Stephen C. Hosford and his son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Christina. Great grandchildren include Wiley Johannesmeyer; Jolie, Sydney, Fischer, Mollie, and Nicholas Cutchshaw; and Hosford and Pryor Roberts. Other survivors include her sister Charlotte (Peggy) M. Davis, and other family members and relatives of her own generation, and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Prentiss loved to travel, and was part of the initial Friendship Force Exchange from Atlanta to Newcastle, England. She helped distribute Bibles on a missionary expedition to Russia. She also enjoyed trips to Italy and China as well as several other trips to Europe. She traveled for both work and pleasure in the United States and Canada.
Services will be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Gainesville on Saturday September 1, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. An additional memorial service may be held at a later time. Instead of flowers, please donate either to Peachtree Christian Church in Atlanta, First Presbyterian Church, Gainesville, or the J. Michael Hosford Foundation, Gainesville.
