George A. "Pete" Whiten, Sr., of Gainesville died August 16, 2012 at his residence.
Pete Whiten was born August 29, 1915 and was raised in Franklin County, Georgia, outside of Martin, Georgia in the Red Hill Community. Formerly of Manchester, Georgia, Pete and his family moved to Gainesville in 1953 to become City Clerk, a position he held until 1958 when he became City Manager for Gainesville which he held until 1970. Mr. Whiten retired from the Georgia Department of Human Resources in 1978.
He was the son of the late William Reece and Mary Bentley Whiten. Pete attended school in Franklin County, North Georgia College and graduated from the University of Georgia.
Pete served in the United States Army during World War II in Europe and was awarded the Silver and Bronze Star. He retired from the Army Reserves in 1975. Pete and his family were members of the First Baptist Church.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 64 years Evelyn B. Whiten and son George A. "Pete" Whiten, Jr. as well as his three brothers and one sister.
Survivors include his daughter Sandy Whiten of Gainesville; daughter and son-in-law, Patricia W. and David E. Boozer, Jr. of Marietta; daughter-in-law, Jane W. Whiten of Gainesville; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 19, 2012 in the chapel of First Baptist Church. Rev. Bruce Fields will officiate. The family will receive friends in the Parlor at the church after the service.
