Alexander Funeral Home of Cleveland announces the death of Mr. Ralph Andrew Pierce, age 99 of Murrayville. Mr. Pierce passed away Thursday, August 09, 2012 at his residence.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 pm, Saturday, August 11, 2012 from Wahoo Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Head, Rev. Les Fuller, and Rev. Verner London officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
Mr. Pierce was born in Lumpkin County on October 17, 1912 to the late C.D. and Ona Chapman Pierce. He attended North Georgia College and taught at Eastside School for a number of years. In addition he was an established plumber and electrician and accomplished musician. From 1935 to 1981 he owned and operated with his family C.D. Pierce and Son Grocery. It was during that time that he became affectionately known as the "Checker King". Mr. Pierce served with honor during World War II, participated in the Normandy Invasion and has the distinguished honor of being the oldest veteran in Lumpkin County as well as the oldest living member of Wahoo Baptist Church, where he served for many years as the Adult Sunday School teacher.
Mr. Pierce was preceded in death by his parents Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Pierce, & Sister, Tommie Pierce.
Survivors include his foster brother and sister-in-law Donald and Doris Flanagan of Murrayville, grandchildren Becky and Daniel Fuller, also of Murrayville, Kevin and Stephanie Flanagan o f Fairfield, Iowa, great grandchildren, Evan Gentry, Allyson Gentry, Aidan Flanagan, Garrett Flanagan & Merrick Flanagan.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday August 10, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m
