Venable Cherry "V.C." Allison of Gainesville, Georgia died on July 18, 2012 peacefully in his sleep after a short battle with heart disease.
He was born in White County on October 18, 1920, to Robert and Mae Skelton Allison. Venable served his country in World War II where he was stationed in Bermuda. After the war, he returned to Georgia and went on to attend Young Harris College, The University of Georgia and Columbia University. He started his career as a science teacher at Lyman Hall School in 1949. He left in 1956 to go to Riverbend as principal for one year. He then returned to Lyman Hall as principal and served there until his retirement in 1980.
Through the years, he was active at Chicopee United Methodist Church, the 4-H Club, the Optimist Club and especially the Retired Teachers Association, where he was state treasurer for several years.
An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed all of nature, including hiking, fishing, and especially organic gardening. He was an excellent tennis player and won many tennis tournaments.
Venable was an accomplished amateur magician and enjoyed performing for all ages especially his students. A lifelong bachelor, Venable maintained many friendships through the years and for those friends, he was truly thankful and blessed.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 23, 2012 in the chapel of Mason & Ward Funeral Home. Rev. Susan Maddox and Rev. Gerry Davis will officiate. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in Hillside Memorial Gardens with full military honors.
