Virginia Craig Conte Winchester

Obituary Date: Sunday, June 17, 2012

Virginia Craig Conte Winchester, born August 2, 1924 in Monroe County, Georgia, where she spent her childhood on a farm owned by her parents, Harvey Craig and Martha Lee Sutton Graig, located on Craig Road. She passed away Sunday, June 17, 2012. Virginia attended Blount Elementary school in Blount, GA, Mary Persons High in Forsyth, GA and Mercer University in Macon, GA. She was a member of Tatnall Square Baptist Church in Macon, GA for several years and Briarcliff Baptist Church in Atlanta, GA for over 45 years. She was employed with the U. S. Government at Robins Air Force Base, Warner Robins, GA, and then employed by Fickling and Walker, Macon, GA, as insurance manager.



Virginia married Alfred Charles Conte in 1954 and over the next several years, due to her husband's transfers, she lived in Jacksonville, FL, Atlanta, GA, Indianapolis, IN, Tenafly, NJ, and then back to Atlanta, GA. In 1966 Alfred Conte was killed in an auto accident. During the next several years, Virginia spent her time caring for her two daughters, her aging Aunt and her mother.



In 1970 Virginia started dating Norman Winchester, whom she married in August 1971 in a church ceremony in Decatur, GA. Over the next 40 years Virginia and Norman traveled to Europe several times, to Great Britain, Mexico, Canada and most of the 48 U. S. states visiting several of the National Parks.



In 1973 Virginia and her husband Norman, purchased Chewing Auto Parts in Tucker, GA, and renamed it to Winchester Auto Parts. They operated as partners until they sold it in 1989. After a short vacation and some travel time, she was offered and accepted a position at King's Bridge Retirement Center and spent the next eight years as bookkeeper.



Virginia lost her youngest daughter, Paula Conte in an auto accident in August 1986.



Survivors include her husband, Norman Morris Winchester, daughter, Pamela Pack both of Cumming; step daughter, Nancy Pope and husband Edwin of Decatur, GA; grandkids, Blythe Pack, of New York, Sarena Mulkey of Vinings, GA, Samantha, David, Zachary and Ian Pope of Decatur, GA; two great grand kids, Ian and Ava Mulkey.


Graveside services will be held Thursday, June 21st at 1:00 pm at Monroe Memorial Hills Garden in Forsyth, GA. The family will receive friends at Ingram Funeral Home on Wednesday from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.
