Dewey Lee Head

Dewey Lee Head, age 95 of Cornelia passed away Sunday, June 10, 2012 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center after a brief illness. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of Hillside Baptist Church in Cornelia, Georgia.

Mr. Head was born January 19, 1917, in White County, Georgia to the late Lee Head and Laura Presley Head. He went to Cornelia High School and upon completion began his career as a gunsmith. He enlisted in the United States Army during World War II serving in the Ordinance Department for five years, with three of those years in North Africa and Italy. During his career he attained the rank of Technical Sargent.

In 1946, after an honorable discharge from the Army, he spent 62 years as sole proprietor of Modern Gun Shop. He repaired thousands of guns and heard many stories of the biggest buck ever and the "one that got away". All counted, he spent 70 years doing what he loved. He was a lifelong member of the National Rifle Association.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Beulah Beaty Head, three brothers and four sisters.

He is survived by one daughter, Beverly Jordan of Alpharetta, Georgia and one son Herbert Head of Cornelia. He is also survived by a grandson, Chris Head of Gainesville, Georgia, presently assigned to Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning Georgia and his wife Megan Thomas Head. He has one granddaughter, Katherine Glynn Head, of Cornelia, Georgia. He is also survived by Sister-In-Laws Dorothy Poole of Cornelia, Georgia; Kathryn Farris of Tucson Arizona; Glenda Craven of Macon, Georgia; and Sarita Head of Cleveland, Ohio along with many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 Thursday June 14, 2012 at McGahee-Griffin and Stewart Funeral home in Cornelia Georgia with Rev. Terry Rice officiating. Interment will follow at Yonah Memorial Gardens in Demorest Georgia with full military honors provided by American Legion Post 84, Rabun County DAV Chapter 15 and the Grant-Reeves VFW Post 7720. Family will receive friends on Wednesday at the funeral home from 2:00 until 4:00p.m. and again from 6:00 until 9:00p.m.
