Louise Wages Gunnin
Obituary Date: Sunday, June 10, 2012
Mrs. Louise Wages Gunnin passed away peacefully at her home on June 10, 2012 after a two-year battle with brain cancer. She was 76 years old.
Louise was born in Atlanta, Georgia on January 27, 1936 to Morgan and Jewel Wages. They moved around when she was a child because her father, who was an executive with Southern Bell Telephone Company, was assigned to many positions in the territory. Eventually they ended up in Clarkston, Georgia, where Louise enthusiastically became a cheerleader for the Angora Goats. She graduated from Clarkston High School in 1954.
Following her natural instinct to help others, Louise went on to the Georgia Baptist School of Nursing to become a Registered Nurse. A goal she accomplished in 1958. In that same year she married her sweetheart Ray Gunnin, and they were married for 54 years.
The couple built their home in Norcross, where they were members of the First Baptist Norcross for an extended period of time. Louise was a nurse at Joan Glancy Hospital in Duluth for many years and had a natural gift for the job. When Ray was elected Commissioner Louise became the gracious wife of a successful politician. At the same time, she was the mother of two children, which required Louise to juggle, but as an expert organizer she excelled at the demands of family life.
Once the children were grown, Ray and Louise moved north to Clermont, Georgia where they bought some property and built their dream home. A member of Concord Baptist Church for 15 years, Louise was active in several ministries. Never one to sit idle, Louise occupied her time with many activities including, number one baby sitter for her grandchildren, the Brenau Hiking Club, tennis team , a Northeast Ga. hospital volunteer, Co-organizer of the Gainesville Strummers dulcimer group, and church activities at First Baptist Church in Gainesville, Georgia. Pouring into others, and living life to the fullest was her aim. She did both in excellence.
Survivors include her husband Ray Gunnin Sr. of Clermont, Georgia; Daughter and son-in-law Gail and Greg Hutton of Red Feather, Colorado, grandson Ben Biggs of San Diego Ca.; Son and daughter-in-law Bill and Michelle Gunnin, granddaughter Hannah Gunnin, grandsons, Aaron, William, and Peter Gunnin all of Cleveland, Georgia. Brother and sister-in-law Jim and Brenda Wages of Clermont, Georgia; Brother and sister-in-law Danny and Linda Wages of Boulder, Colorado; Brother and sister-in-law Tom and Bobbie Wages of Amelia Island, Florida. She also has several nieces and nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and too many friends to count.
A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:00 on June 13, 2012 in the Chapel of First Baptist Church of Gainesville with Dr. Bill Coates, Pastor, presiding. The family will hold a reception following to receive friends and loved ones.
