Charles J. Slay, Jr.

Charles J. Slay, Jr., age 78 of Gainesville passed away Thursday, June 7, 2012 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Mr. Slay was born September 5, 1933, in Athens, Georgia to the late Charles, Sr., and Lila Spratlin Slay. Graduate of the University of Georgia, Mr. Slay was a retired general contractor and real estate appraiser, a veteran of the United States Army, Army Corps of Engineers, and an active member of Civitan International. Mr. Slay was a former Boy Scout Leader and Scoutmaster. He was a Past President of the Gainesville/ Hall County Chamber of Commerce and the Lanier Chapter of the Georgia Society of Professional Engineers. He also was Governor of Georgia District North Civitan and Civitan International Director. He was a 1st Lieutenant in the Army serving in Korea.

Through his years in the construction business, Mr. Slay left his mark on the Gainesville and North Georgia landscape with buildings like Gainesville First United Methodist Church and the renovation of Hunt Tower.

Survivors include his wife, Marion Burgin Slay, Gainesville; sons and daughters-in-law; Rick and Angela Slay, Cleveland; Eddie and Stacey Slay, Clarkesville; daughter, Tammy Slay, Gainesville; siblings, Charlotte Shaw, Tucson, AZ, Bob and Peggy Lassolette, Mission Viejo, CA, Richard and Becky Slay, Bogart, GA, Gale and Beverly Slay, Bogart; Bob and Alice Slay, Newnan; grandchildren; Amber and Mike Park, Cleveland; Cayla and Brandon Blackburn, Cleveland; Logan Slay, Cleveland; Launn and Brandon Thompson, Flowery Branch; Beau Davis, Athens; Quinn Davis, Fanklin, NC; great grandchildren; Isaly, Ceara, Kendall, India and Gabriel Parks, Cleveland; Sidney Thompson, Flowery Branch.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday June 10, 2012 at the Gainesville First United Methodist Church. Rev. Terry Walton and Rev. Hugh Cauthen will officiate. Interment will follow in the Alta Vista Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Little & Davenport Funeral Home Saturday June 9, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Mr. Slay will lie in state at the church on Sunday from 2:30 p.m. until the funeral hour.
