Dr. Claud L. Brown, of Watkinsville, Georgia passed away peacefully Sunday, May 27, 2012 at the age of 86.
A native of Flowery Branch, Georgia he was the son of the late Claude LaFayette Brown and Alma Denson Brown of Cumming and Flowery Branch. Dr. Brown was formerly Professor of Botany and Alumni Foundation Distinguished Professor of Forest Resources at the University of Georgia. Dr. Brown joined the faculties of Botany and Forest Resources at UGA in 1960, having served previously at Texas A & M University at College Station, Texas. He retired from teaching and research at the University of Georgia in 1985.
Dr. Brown was a graduate of Young Harris College and held earned Degrees in Forestry and Botany from the University of Georgia and the doctorate in Biology from Harvard University. He was internationally recognized for scores of research publications and several texts in tree physiology, genetics, and pioneering work in tissue culture and cloning of forest trees. During his academic career he served as mentor to 20 Doctoral students in various fields of botany and forest biology. Dr. Brown was a veteran of World War II, having served in the South Pacific on the aircraft carrier, USS Lexington, in 1945-46 at Okinawa and Japan. He was a former member and Steward of the Flowery Branch Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his Wife, Billie Kinsey Brown.
Survivors include, Daughter and Husband, Claudia Parr and Darin Parr of Richmond, VA, Son and Wife, Scott V. Brown and Janet Wehring Brown of Houston, TX, Granddaughters, Nicole and Tiffany Brown of Houston, TX. He is also survived by several nephews and nieces and numerous great nephews and nieces.
Graveside Services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Thursday May 31, 2012 in Gainesville, GA at Alta Vista Cemetery for Dr. Claud L. Brown. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Thursday 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
