John R. (Mac) McPherson

John R. (Mac) McPherson of Chestnut Mountain, GA passed away on Friday, April 27.

John was born in Lenoir City, TN on January 2, 1927. His family later moved to Knoxville, TN where he attended Rule High School. Upon graduation he was drafted by the Navy and served in the Pacific during WW II. Upon his return, he graduated from East Tennessee State University as well as Vanderbilt University. In 1955 he and his wife June moved to Stone Mountain where he began his teaching and coaching career at Stone Mountain High School and later became the Asst. Principal. During his tenure at Stone Mountain High he continued his education by earning a graduate degree from the University of Georgia. He remained at Stone Mountain High School until 1974 when he became the Coordinator of the Adult Enrichment Program at Georgia Perimeter College (formerly DeKalb College) until his retirement in 1984. After retirement Mr. McPherson co-founded American Hole 'n One where he worked until 2005. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gainesville as well as Royal Lakes Country Club. He is preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mary McPherson and sister Mary Schaad. He is survived by his wife, June Allen McPherson, daughter and son-in-law Mary Lou Lewis and John Lewis and son John McPherson and daughter-in-law Beth McPherson. Grandchildren, Leslie Mayeur (Dr. Jason Mayeur), John A. Lewis, Anna and Sara McPherson.

At John's request, his remains were donated to Emory University Medical Research. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to First Baptist Church of Gainesville, c/o Our Faith our Future, 751 Green St. Gainesville, GA. 30501 or

A Memorial Service will be held in the Chapel of the First Baptist Church of Gainesville on Tuesday, May 1st at 2pm.
