Julia Myers Grumbine

Julia Myers Grumbine, 96, of The Cascades, Greenville, SC, widow of Arthur Allen Grumbine, died on Friday, January 20, 2012.

Born in Savannah, GA, on August 12, 1915, she was the daughter of the late Col. David and Julia Reed Myers.

Julia spent her grammar and high school years in Columbia, TN, where her father was Superintendent of Columbia Military Academy. She graduated from Judson College, in Marion, AL in 1937, and then taught English and French from 1937 until 1939 at Riverbend School when her family moved to Gainesville, GA, and her father was Headmaster of Riverside Military Academy. During World War II she was employed as Librarian at Headquarters Army Air Force, Bolling Field. Later she was Research Analyst, Military Intelligence, Army Office Chief of Staff G-2, Pentagon, Arlington, VA. Her husband, Arthur Allen Grumbine, served in the U.S. Air Force in World War II and later in the Korean War. He also worked with the U.S. Forest Service, and was the Assistant Regional Forester, Chief of Operations, Southeast Region.

When they later lived in Atlanta, GA, she was senior associate Librarian at the Atlanta Public Library, Sandy Springs Branch, for 11 years. When the family moved to Gainesville, she was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church. She served many years on the Altar and Flower Guilds, as well as Daughters of the King. She was also a member of the Hall County Junior League and the Fine Arts Study Club.

She is survived by a son, Allen Grumbine and wife, Nikki; grandson, John Grumbine and wife, Megan, and their sons, James and Andrew; grandson, Peter Grumbine and wife, Shannon, and their daughter Zoë; nephew, David Sumpter and wife, Sandy; and nephew, Rhea Sumpter and wife, Anne.

She was predeceased by grandparents, the late Mr. and Mrs. George Byron Reed and Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Myers of Orangeburg County, SC.

The graveside service will be held Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Alta Vista Cemetery, Gainesville, GA.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice, or Grace Episcopal Church, 422 Brenau Avenue, Gainesville, GA 30501.
