Margaret "Jewell" Campbell West

Margaret "Jewell" Campbell West of Dahlonega, Georgia, passed away peacefully at home on the evening of January 1, 2012. Mrs. West was born in Centerville, Georgia. on June 18, 1916. She was the daughter of John and Ella Ford Campbell. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold West on January 3, 1999 and sister Susie Mason and brothers Fred Campbell, Johnny Campbell and Clark Campbell.

Mrs. West came to Dahlonega in 1936 to attend North Georgia College where she met her future husband Harold. They were married on September 12, 1936 and, except for a short period during the Second World War, resided in Dahlonega all of their married life.
They owned and operated West Cleaners from 1939 until 1972. During that time they made many long time friends in the local community and among the North Georgia College cadets. Harold and Jewell were honored in 1986 as Gold Rush King and Queen.

Jewell was a loving mother to her four sons and their families. She was a faithful member of the Dahlonega United Methodist Church for 75 years and served on the Board of Trustees, was a member of the Breath of Spring Sunday school class, the Hill-toppers, and the UMW. Her sweet potato casserole and chocolate pound cake were popular at all the church functions.

She was a member of Eastern Star, Woodmen Circle, the Dahlonega Women's Club, and she served on the Dahlonega Housing Authority, the Hospital Auxiliary and was an ardent fundraiser with the American Cancer Society.

She is survived by her four sons and their spouses, Johnny and Ranelle West of Chatsworth, GA; Jimmy Therrell West of Gainesville, GA; Derrell and Carol West of Dahlonega, GA and Jackie and Diane West of Cumming, GA; 12 Grandchildren; 19 Great-Grandchildren and 2 Great-Great Grandchildren.

The funeral service will be held at the Dahlonega United Methodist Church on Wednesday, January 4th at 3:00 pm. Reverend Gene Davis and Dr. Jeff Ross will officiate Mrs. West's service. Interment will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Mrs. West will lie in state at the church on Wednesday from 2:30 PM until 3 PM.

The family will receive friends from 6 until 9pm on Monday January 2, 2012, on Tuesday January 3, 2012 from 2pm until 4pm and 5:30pm until 9pm and on Wednesday until 2pm at Banister Funeral Home of Dahlonega, Ga.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Dahlonega United Methodist Church building fund.
