Alfred Hans "Al" Jorgensen, 77, of Dawsonville passed away Friday October 28, 2011 at his residence following a courageous battle with cancer.
Born May 1, 1934 in South Gate, California to the late Peter and Anna Christine Jorgensen, he had lived in Dawson County for 20 years having moved from Dunwoody. Mr. Jorgensen graduated from George Washington High School in Los Angeles, served in the U. S. Army during the Korean Conflict, attended El Camino College, UCLA and the Harvard Business School. Early in his career, Al helped to develop a computer system for the first nuclear power plant. He was a pioneer in the computer industry and during his career served as CEO of five companies. After retiring from Sprint, he became an adjunct professor in the graduate program at the Goizueta Business School at Emory University where he taught a class on entrepreneurship. Mr. Jorgensen possessed a love for sailing, helped establish the Dawson County Humane Society and was a past chairman of the Dawson County Relay for Life. Al was a generous and giving person who shared his resources to better his community and fellow man. He invested his time acting as a mentor and counsel to many on the subjects of business and life. He would not hesitate to take time out of his day to help a person in need. He was a lifelong car enthusiast, building and restoring hot rod cars and trucks and proudly showing them at local car shows in Dawsonville. Al was an active member of New Hope United Methodist Church in Gainesville where he was a member of the men's group. He was also preceded in death by a beloved son, Mark Jorgensen.
Al was married for 51 years to the love of his life and is survived by his wife, Carole Jorgensen, Dawsonville; daughter and son in law, Lora and Lincoln Havens, Wake Forest, NC; five grandchildren; sister and brother in law, Ann and Ned Ryder, Lafayette, California.
Memorial services will be held Saturday November 5, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. at New Hope United Methodist Church. Pastor Larry Patton will officiate.
The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 11 a.m.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to a fund established in Al's name for New Hope United Methodist Church, 4815 Dawsonville Highway, Gainesville, GA 30506.
