Lois Betty Kock Murtaugh

Mrs. Lois Betty Kock Murtaugh, 82 of Gainesville, died October 10, 2011 at Lanier Village Estates following an extended illness. Born February 16, 1929 to Minnie (Schemmel) and Harvey Kock on a farm north of Alvord, Iowa. At age 2, in 1931, the family moved to a farm northwest of Elkton, South Dakota. Lois was a 1946 graduate of Elkton High School in South Dakota and a 1949 graduate of Central Radio & Television School in Sioux Falls, SD. She joined American Airlines in 1950 as a flight attendant and received her Silver Wings in 1951. Nicknamed "Cookie" by her crewmates, Lois flew out of Chicago and then New York.

Lois met her husband, Gordon, on one of her New York flights. They married in 1952 at The Little Church Around the Corner in New York City. After marrying, Lois left American Airlines to raise a family, which came to include five children. She was very proud of their many accomplishments and took great joy in her eight grand children. After moving to Lanier Village Estates, Lois and Gordon became members of the Gainesville First United Methodist Church. Lois was always an active volunteer with her church, spending time visiting, bringing meals, and providing support to those in need.

Preceded in death by parents, twin brother Loren, and older brother Don. Survived by devoted husband, Gordon of 59 years; sons Gordon Jr. of San Francisco, CA, and Tom (Kim) Murtaugh of Atlanta, GA, daughters Joan (Peter) Borstell of New Orleans, LA, Kathy (Daryl) Ross of Tucson, AZ, and Patty (Craig) Wise of Nashville, TN; four grandsons: Bill Borstell of New Orleans, LA; Grant Ross of Tucson, AZ; Sean Murtaugh of Atlanta, GA; David Wise of Nashville, TN. Four granddaughters: Ashley Ross of Los Angeles, CA; Katie Ross of New York, NY, Reilly Murtaugh of Atlanta, GA; and Emma Wise of Nashville, TN. Also survived by sister Shirley Jenson of Ft. Atkinson, WI; brother Virgil & sister in law, Jane Kock of Newton, NJ, sisters in law Delores Kock of Alvord, IA and Irene Koch of Sioux Falls, SD, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 17, 2011 at Lanier Village Estates Chapel. The family will receive friends after the service at 2:30 p.m.
