Roger Eugene Shafer

Obituary Date: Tuesday, September 27, 2011
Roger Eugene Shafer, 66, of Buford, GA, was taken suddenly in a construction accident on September 17, 2011, while in Wills Creek, West Virginia. A memorial service will be held Thursday, September 29, 2011 at 7:30 PM at Hamilton Mill Memorial Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until time of service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family request donations be made to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at www.choa.org in memory of Roger Shafer.

Roger was preceded in death by his parents, Ray Shafer and Mattie Withrow Shafer of Clendenin, WV. He is survived by his wife Sherry Legg Shafer from Cannelton, WV. They were married in 1969. They had two daughters, Christy Spooner and Husband, Michael, Cumming, GA and Holley Shafer, Cumming, GA. Grandsons Reiken, age 6, and Caelix, age 3, of Cumming, GA, In-laws William and Norma Legg of Buford, originally of Cannelton, WV. Sisters Barbara Samples and Marjorie Harris of Polk City, FL, Ann Wehrle of Clendenin, WV, and Lois Cottrell of Elkview, WV. Brothers, Marvin, Eddie and Teddy Shafer of Clendenin, WV.

Roger graduated from Clendenin H.S. in 1963. He served in the Air Force and worked in construction both here in the United States and Bolivia, South America. While in Buford, GA, he founded his own company, Shafer Welding & Mechanics which was in business for over 20 years.

He and his wife were retired and immensely enjoyed time with their grandsons and family. They also traveled throughout the U.S., most often in the West. He looked forward to elk hunting each autumn in Colorado with friends and family.

He was much beloved and well-respected by all that knew him. He will be greatly missed.
