George A. Palmer

Mr. George A. "G.A." Palmer, age 91 of Clarkesville, Georgia passed away on Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at his residence following an extended illness.

George known to most as G.A. was born March 13, 1920 in Clarkesville, Georgia to the late Thomas Jefferson and Beulah Stamey Palmer. G.A. was a U.S. Army veteran serving in WWII from January 26, 1942 until December 13, 1945, during the Southern Philippines Liberation. His duty as a truck driver hauling personnel, ammunition, food, gasoline, and other supplies earned him the American Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal with three bronze stars, one bronze arrowhead, The Philippines Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, and the WWII Victory Medal during his service to his beloved country. He was employed for 31 years and 5 months with Habersham Electric Membership Corporation in Clarkesville, Georgia and retired in March of 1982. G.A. was a member and Deacon of the Habersham Baptist Church in Demorest, Georgia. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Ray, Willie, Clifford, Roy, and Robert Palmer, sisters, Vera Allen, Beatrice Daniel, and Ruth Daniel, and son-in-law, Russ Overton.

G.A. is survived by his loving and faithful wife of 65 years, Ada Franklin Palmer, Clarkesville, GA; daughters and sons-in-law, Gail and Nelson Crowe, Clarkesville, GA; Shirley and Mike Roberts, Mt. Airy, GA; Kathy and Phil Harris, Baldwin, GA; Phyllis and Tim Carter, Commerce, GA. He was Grandpa to 15 grandchildren and Papa Palmer to 25 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 22, 2011 at the Habersham Baptist Church with the Rev. Johnny Thomas and the Rev. Matt Thomas officiating. Interment will follow in the Habersham Cemetery. The family requests that everyone meet at the church by 10:45 a.m. on Thursday.

The family will receive friends at the North Chapel in Demorest from 2 until 4 p.m. and 6 until 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that all donations be made, in memory of Brother G.A. Palmer, to the Habersham Baptist Church, 506 Old Habersham Mills Road, Demorest, Georgia 30535.
