Dr. DeWitt T. Cox

Obituary Date: Thursday, September 1, 2011
Dr. DeWitt T. Cox, age 80, of Hoschton went to be with his heavenly father on Thursday, September 1, 2011.

A celebration of his life and ministry will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, September 5, 2011 at North Metro First Baptist Church in Lawrenceville with Dr. Frank Cox and Dr. J. Robert White officiating. Burial will be in Hamilton Mill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends Sunday, September 4th from 2:00 to 5:00 PM and 6:00 to 8:00 PM and on Monday from 12:00 to 2:00 PM at North Metro First Baptist Church.

DeWitt was born in Macon, Georgia, graduated from Norman College, Florida State University and received an Honorary Doctorate from Luther Rice Seminary. He pastored churches in Georgia and Florida for thirty five years and retired from the Georgia Baptist Foundation in 1998 where he served as Vice President for fourteen years. He served as a consultant for seven years to The Alaska Baptist Foundation and as a consultant for Truett McConnell College in Cleveland, Georgia for nine years. Dr. Cox was faithful in pulpit supply and had served as Vice President for the Georgia Baptist Convention as well as a Trustee of The Baptist Village in Waycross, Georgia and was currently serving as a Trustee of the Georgia Baptist Foundation.

He was preceded in death by his father, Rev. D.T. Cox, Sr., his mother, Ursa Smith Cox, his sister, Oneita U. Cox Mulkey and his brother, Clarence P. Cox.

Survivors include his wife of sixty one years, Edna Reeder Cox of Hoschton; children, Linda and Jerry Palmer of Hoschton, Anna and Emory McEver of Canton, Dr. Frank and Mary Cox of Lawrenceville, Susan and Al Berrong of Atlanta; two sisters, Evie and Billy Bennett of North Augusta, SC and Sybil Cox of Melbourne, Florida; eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

The family requests that all ministers and Georgia Baptist Convention personnel serve as honorary pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Truett McConnell College in Cleveland, Georgia in his memory.
