William Pittman Roberts

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, August 31, 2011 at First Methodist Church in Gainesville for Mr. William "Bill" Pittman Roberts, 89, of Gainesville. The Rev. Dr. Hugh Cauthen will officiate. Interment will be in Alta Vista Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church after the service.



A native of Hall County he was the son of the late William Albert and Anne Butts Roberts. His education includes: Bachelor of Arts, History- Emory University, Atlanta, GA; Masters of Arts, History - University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC; Doctor of Philosophy, History - University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC and Advanced Studies -Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH; Tunghai University, Taichung City, Taiwan, Republic of China; United States Military Academy, West Point, NY.



His publications included: Publications: Author - Georgia's Best Kept Secret: A History of North Georgia College; Contributor: New Georgia Encyclopedia.



He was Professor of History, North Georgia College & State University, University System of Georgia, 1949-1989. Professor Emeritus of Social Sciences, University System of Georgia, 1989 - present.



He was a member of the following organizations: Life Member; International Association of Lions Clubs, Gainesville, GA; Sons of the American Revolution; Lyman Hall Chapter, Gainesville, GA Past Member: Gainesville Kiwanis Club, Southern Historical Society; a member of Gainesville First United Methodist Church and a former teacher of the Open Door Sunday School Class.



He is survived by son and fiancée John W. M. Roberts and Dr. Jo Ann Canich.
