Hubert Daniel Sanders

Obituary Date: Friday, July 15, 2011
After a 70 year adventure on this earth, Hubert Daniel Sanders, the Wiseman of Mt. Airy, has moved on. Born and raised in Toccoa, GA, he was a man driven by curiosity, ingenuity, and big plans. His boundless sense of adventure and his quest for knowledge led him down many roads. He served as a paratrooper in the 82nd Airborne Division from 1958 to 1962 and was proud of the fact that he jumped out of the first plane he ever flew in. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, an active volunteer for the Scottish Rite Children's Hospitals, a drag racer, an accomplished machinist, a teacher, and a connoisseur and collector of ancient Bibles and manuscripts.
Most importantly, he was a loving, strong man, and an inspirational husband, father, grandfather, and friend.

He leaves behind his wife Carolyn Sanders, son Ben Sanders, daughter-in-law Jenny Sanders, and the apple of his eye, his granddaughter Lizzie. He is also survived by his sister Lou Ayers and her husband Bill, and his sister Sylvialene Sanders, as well as many other brothers and sisters by marriage, nieces, nephews, and countless devoted friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Pauline Sanders, his mother-in-law, Lizzie Mae Sellers, and brother-in-law, Frank Sellers.
Colonel Sanders, as he often called himself, will be sorely missed by those who had the privilege of knowing him. He embarks on this new journey with the love, prayers, and best wishes of his family and friends, who, though sad for their own loss, are thrilled on his behalf for this new adventure he has begun.
A celebration of Mr. Sanders' life will be held at 3 pm on Sunday, July 24, 2011 at the McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Chapel with Dr. Kenneth Franklin officiating. The service will be followed by a brief graveside ceremony at Yonah Memorial Gardens including full military honors by the Habersham County American Legion Post #84, Grant Reeves VFW Post #7720 and the Rabun County DAV Chapter #15. The family will receive friends from 1 pm until the service hour on Sunday, July 24, 2011 at the funeral home.
