Pete Morrison

Mr. Pete Morrison, 91 of Gainesville died Monday July 4, 2011 at his home after an extended illness.

A life long resident of Gainesville, Pete was the son of the late John and Kate Simmons Morrison. Pete attended Lyman Hall High School, and was a member of the first graduating class, he later also attended Furman University. His life's work was spent in the hardware business, owning and operating the Ace Hardware store in Gainesville that he purchased in 1975, and previous to that he traveled for many years selling hardware. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Navy. Pete was a civic leader and served on the Gainesville City School Board for many years and served as its chairman from 1973-1978. He served on the library board, and was a member of the Gainesville Elks Club, Gainesville Jaycees, Kiwanis Club of Gainesville, as well as being a long time member of the First Baptist Church on Green Street.

Many know Pete as an outstanding football and basketball referee for the Blue Ridge Association officiating many games throughout Georgia. He played semi-professional baseball as well as basketball in his youth.

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday July 6, 2011 in the First Baptist Church Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Bill Coates will officiate. A private family interment will be held at the Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church parlor after the memorial service Wednesday.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Myrele Reed Morrison, Gainesville; daughter and son-in-law; Melissa and Chuck Herbert, Gainesville; grandson, William Morrison Wade, Gainesville along with a number of nieces, nephews and many long-time friends and family.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the Ministry of Caring, c/o the First Baptist Church, 751 Green Street, Gainesville, Georgia 30501 or one's favorite charity in memory of Mr. Morrison.
