Lula Dessie Bennett

Obituary Date: Tuesday, June 21, 2011
Mrs. Lula Dessie Bennett, 91, of Gainesville passed away Tuesday June 21, 2011 at her home following a brief illness.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Thursday June 23, 2011 in the Little & Davenport Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Earl Pirkle will officiate. Interment will follow in the Alta Vista Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday June 22, 2011 from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and again from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Lula passed away after courageously fighting the results of a stroke in January. She spent over 30 years working for Milliken Manufacturing at Gainesville Mill.

Lula will be missed for her kindness, loving smile and the way she lit up a room when she walked into it. She shared her great cooking with many people, especially her famous chocolate cake. Bird watching, gardening, canning, and sewing were her other passions. She was very caring and loving having many friends and family whom she spoke with on a daily basis. Lula was a member of the Central Baptist Church. Her faith was her strength and in the end her peace.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Hassie Mae Martin, her baby boy, Billy Wayne Bennett, and her husband, Ray Clarence Bennett.

Survivors include her special niece, Jean Austin Curtis and family Sam Curtis, Ken Curtis, Karen and Sean Childers, Carly Childers, Austin Childers; nephew, Harold Austin and family, Pam and Eddie Morgan, Cassie Morgan, Patti and Ryan Simpson; nephew Leon Austin and family Pat Austin, Tyrone and Elizabeth Austin, Bella Austin, Emmeline Austin, Sabrina and Dan Bishop, Laquita and Mark Smith, Donald and JoAnn Teal; and other nieces and nephews and her favorite pet, Maggie Mae Childers.

The family would like to thank all the people personally and professionally, who gave their love and support to Lula throughout her life and during her illness. Your calls, visits and cards sustained all of us during this sad time in our lives.

Flowers are welcome or contributions may be made to the Central Baptist Church Caring Committee, 785 Main Street, Gainesville, Georgia 30501.
