Rev. Selmon Gilleland
Obituary Date: Friday, May 6, 2011
Funeral Services are scheduled for 3:00p.m. Sunday May 8 in the Ward's Funeral Home Chapel for Rev. Selmon Gilleland age 85 of Gainesville. The Rev. Ralph O. Smith will officiate. Interment will follow in Alta Vista Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 2:00pm to 3:00pm at the funeral home. Rev. Gilleland passed away Thursday May 5 at his residence following an extended illness.
Rev. Gilleland was born in Brookton, Georgia to the late Oscar Washington Gilleland and Hattie Nix Gilleland. He served in the U.S. Navy for 3 years in WWII on an aircraft ship. He had worked at the Davis Washington Lumber Company as a special trim designer. He was ordained as a Baptist Minister at Pleasant Union Baptist Church where he was also a member. He had pastored several churches including Diamond Hill Baptist Church, and Hopewell Baptist Church among others. He was preceded in death by his Sister Pauline Greene, Two Brothers Garnett Gilleland and Lee Gilleland, and nephew Kenneth Gilleland.
Survivors include Wife of 63 years Mattie V. Young Gilleland, Gainesville, Sister Kathrine Holland, Pine Hurst, NC and 15 nieces and nephews.
