Bill J. Dupree

Obituary Date: Thursday, May 5, 2011
Billy Jack "Bill" Dupree, 64, of Gainesville, died Thursday, May 5, 2011, following a brief illness.

The funeral will be held Monday, May 9, 2011 at 11 a.m. at Lakewood Baptist Church with Dr. Tom Smiley, the Rev. Darryl Dale and the Rev. Milton Harris officiating. Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, May 08, 2011 at Memorial Park North Riverside Chapel.

Bill was born Oct. 14, 1946, in Ft. Payne, Ala to the late Leonard and Wyoma Dupree. He served two years in the U.S. Army and 13 months in the Vietnam War, where he was shot and given little chance to live because of a collapsed lung. However, he recovered following a long stay at a hospital in Japan and lived a long, productive life. He received a Purple Heart from the Army.

Bill was married for 43 years to Sue Dukes Dupree and for the last 25 years worked for America's Home Place, where he was an assistant to the president, Barry Connor. His most recent accomplishment was the negotiation with the owners of Olive Garden and Chedders to sell land for new restaurants now being built on the Dawsonville Highway in Gainesville. He was active in homebuilding since he was 17.

Bill was a member of Lakewood Baptist Church and had served as a deacon at New Bridge Baptist Church. "He walked his testimony everywhere he went," his wife said.

"The one Bill loved more than anyone was his Savior, and that's the reason he loved his family, friends and workmates so much," Barry Connor said.

Bill was active in the community, having served as a volunteer for Good News at Noon, Meals on Wheels and Habitat for Humanity.

He served as president of the Jaycees while living in Sigourney, Iowa, and at one time was a member of the Gainesville Jaycees. He loved playing tennis, golf and cheering on the University of Alabama in football. "Bapa" enthusiastically supported his grandson's sporting events.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Dupree; three daughters and son-in-law; Beth Dupree; Tara and Brandon Miller and Emily Dupree; three grandsons, Benson, Mattox and Cohen Miller; all of Gainesville; parents-in-law, Milford and Wydean Dukes, Ft. Payne, Ala.; and numerous relatives and friends.

Flowers are accepted, or memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, the Humane Society of Northeast Georgia or to Rescue 2000.
