Mr. Carmen Vance "Cotton" Martin was born on July 3, 1923. He grew up in the Gainesville Mill Village and played baseball with the Gainesville Mill League. Vance was an avid Baseball and Football fan. He served in the military during World War II and upon his return to civilian life; he went to work at the Wofford Leather Company. Later, he worked at Mar Jac Poultry and then at Weaver Poultry where he retired.
Vance is survived by his wife of 45 years, LaRue Hamby Martin and son, David and wife Pam. He is also survived by three granddaughters, Michele, Amber, and Kelly and has one great grandchild, Logan Cain. He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Lula Anderson Martin, sister, Arrethea Adams, and his brothers, Horace, Arnold, John and Coleman. Vance was a member of the Community Baptist Church in Gainesville.
The family would like to thank the staff and nurses at Compassionate Hospice, especially Dennis and Ted for the loving care they gave to Vance.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday March 23, 2011 in the Little & Davenport Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Gerald Blackburn and Larry Nix will officiate. Interment will follow in Alta Vista Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday March 22, 2011 from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m.
