James O. Hammond

James O. Hammond, 84, died February 4, 2011, in Sandy Springs, Georgia. He was born March 20th, 1926 in Atlanta, Georgia and he was preceded in death by his parents Mary Oxford and Robert Ora Hammond.



Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Marie Pirkle Hammond; beloved daughter, Suzanne H. Wilson and son in law, Edward G. Wilson of Glenallen, Alaska; sisters in law, Mrs. Robert (Catherine) Hammond Jr. , Mrs. Marshall ( Dorothy T.) Pirkle, Mrs. Henry (Grace N.) Pirkle, Mrs. Frank (Elizabeth B.) Pirkle, Mrs. George (Pauline B.) Pirkle; brother in law, Jodie L. Hill and many nieces and nephews.



Jim lived in Nashville, Tennessee from 1927-1936. After returning to Atlanta he attended O'Keefe Junior High and Boys High and went on to attain a Textile Engineering degree at Georgia Tech. He served in the Navy during WWII. He married Marie Ann Pirkle on November 24th, 1948 in Canton, Georgia at her sister's home. Jim worked in the textile industry for over 35 years then went into the insurance business before finally retiring. He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Sandy Springs where he was a deacon. His hobbies included fishing, gardening and playing duplicate bridge.



The family will receive friends Saturday from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Ingram Funeral Home, 210 Ingram Avenue, Cumming, GA 30040, (770) 887-2388. Funeral services will be held at Sunday at 3:00 pm at Ingram Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jimmy Orr and Dr. Kenneth Keene officiating. Burial will follow at Concord Baptist Church Cemetery.



In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Sandy Springs, 650 Mt. Vernon Hwy, NE, Sandy Springs, Georgia 30328.
