Mary Caroline Cargill

Mary Caroline Cargill, age 85, passed away peacefully in Demorest, Georgia on January 26, 2011.


She was born in Columbus, Georgia on June 21, 1925 to the late Walter Hurt Cargill, Sr. and Mary Love Burts Cargill. Mary was educated in the public schools of Muscogee County, attending Sixteenth Street Elementary School and Columbus High School. She graduated from Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia with a BA Degree, Drexel Institute in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with a BS Degree in Library Science, and also the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill with a Master of Art Degree in Comparative Literature. Mary had a working knowledge of French, German, Italian, and Spanish. She was employed at Emory University Library, Oberlin College Library, and was Special Services Army Librarian in Nuremburg, Germany where she supervised four post libraries. After returning to the United States, Mary was employed at Duke University Library, the University of North Carolina Library, at Chapel Hill, and was a long-time resident of Chapel, Hill, North Carolina. Mary loved her two Corgis "Gina" and "Sandy", enjoyed reading, and took pride in gourmet cooking. Mary was preceded in death by her two brothers Dr. Walter Hurt Cargill, Jr. and Robert Hamilton Cargill a niece, Carol Cargill Fiske, nephew, Walter Hurt Cargill, III and a brother-in-law, Richard K. Miller.



Survivors include her sister, Martha Cargill Miller; brother and sister-in-law, Douglas Burts Cargill and Anne Jones Cargill, nieces and their husbands, Elizabeth Cargill Dwany and Dr. David Dwany; Kathy Cargill Morrison, and Gordon Morrison; nephews and their wives, Richard Charles and Nancy Stone Miller; Douglas Stuart and Nancy Strickland Miller; nephew, Joseph Laurence Miller; 15 great-nieces and great-nephews.



A memorial service will be held at Fort Walton Beach, Florida at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that all donations im memory of Mary Cargill be made to the charity of one's choice.
