Shirley Raymond Fricks

Shirley Raymond Fricks, age 91, formerly of Atlanta, Georgia, died on Friday, January 7, 2011 at Lanier Village Estates, Gainesville, Georgia, after a prolonged illness. She was born November 9, 1910 in Greenwich, Connecticut. After graduating from Lasell College, Massachusetts in 1930, she finished her academics in 1932 with a Fine Arts degree from Parsons School of Design, New York City.

Her interests included sailing, painting, gourmet cooking, and traveling. As the first female skipper in the Atlanta Yacht Club, she won several regattas in the 1950's. With her late husband, Roy T. Fricks, Shirley explored several foreign countries including Russia, Spain, England, and Greece. She concluded her travels in 2001 with a trip to the countryside of France to study watercolor painting.

In 1955, Shirley and her husband were among the twenty-one founding members of the Cherokee Town and Country Club in Atlanta, Georgia and were active members for several decades. She was also a member of the Coterie Club, Atlanta Yacht Club, and the congregation of the Cathedral of St. Philip.
She is survived by three daughters and two sons in law, Terry Fricks Baxter of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania., Elizabeth Fricks Faller and Robert Faller of Columbia, South Carolina, and Tracy Fricks Wilson and Ghent Wilson of Cartersville, Georgia; five grandchildren and one great grandchild.

A memorial service will be at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 9, 2011 at the Cartersville Church of The Ascension, Cartersville, Ga. The service will be followed by a reception celebrating her life at the Wilson family home. Her ashes will be interred in Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich, Connecticut.
