Marjorie Green Smith

Marjorie Green Smith, 86, died Saturday, November 26, 2010 at NE Georgia Medical Center after an extended illness. Marjorie, born January 1, 1924, was the daughter of the late Dr. James A. Green and Willie Buff Green. She was proud to be a native of Rabun County. She attended Rabun County Schools and was a member of the 1938 state championship basketball team. The team's trophy still resides at RCHS. Marjorie went on to graduate from Stephen's College in Columbia, MO.
She then returned to her beloved mountains and married the love of her life, Alton "Smitty" Smith. They, together with Marjorie's brother Albert, owned Clayton Drugs for ¬30 years.
Marjorie was a lifelong member of Clayton First United Methodist Church and belonged to the church longer than any current living member. She belonged to the Grace Green Guild and served on numerous church committees and boards. She took pride that her great grandchildren were the 7th generation of her family to attend Clayton First United Methodist Church.
She was a long time member of Clayton Art and Music Club and was a founding member of the Clayton Lunch Bunch. Marjorie was a dedicated gardener, an avid antique collector, a voracious reader and a wonderful cook.
Marjorie was preceded in death by: her husband, Alton "Smitty" Smith; 3 brothers, Dr James Green, John Green and Albert Green.
She is survived by: 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Alton and Kay Smith and J. Mark and Amanda Smith; grandchildren, Al and DeeDee Smith, Cody Smith, Jade Smith and Dylan Smith; great-grandchildren, Katie Mae Smith, Allison Smith, Carley Smith, Trent Miller and Leigha Miller, all of Clayton. She is also survived by local relatives: Buff and Cynthia Green; Andrew, Lauren and Lexi Green; and Jordan Green. Other survivors include numerous nephews and nieces and great nephews and great nieces.
The family will receive friends at Beck Funeral Home, Monday, November 29, 2010 from 6 PM to 8 PM.
Funeral and Committal Services will be held at Clayton United Methodist Church on Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at 1 PM with Rev. Warren Huddleston and Rev. Charlie Green officiating. Burial will follow in Clayton Cemetery.
