A Graveside Service for Ms. Sybil Ann Hendrix will be held Tuesday November 2, 2010 for 2:00 pm at Talmo Baptist Church Cemetery. The Family will be receiving friends at the Funeral home from 12:00pm-1:30pm Tuesday
Ms. Hendrix was born in Talmo, Ga. on December 15, 1928. She graduated from public school in DeKalb Co. in 1946, trained and worked as a nurse's aid at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, GA. and Downey Hospital in Gainesville, GA after World War II. She never aspired to be a nurse but she liked her experience in nursing and was encouraged by her teacher and supervisor to consider training for the profession. She did and became, according to her peers, "One of the finest".
Ms. Hendrix graduated from Crawford W. Long Hospital School of Nursing in 1951 and worked as a registered nurse at Hall Co. Hospital for several years. She began her undergraduate work at Brenau College in 1958 where she was in charge of the infirmary for the college and the Academy. She was a patron to Alpha Delta Pi sorority.
Ms. Hendrix received a J.D. Jewel Scholarship to attend Brenau College. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in 1960 from the Medical college of Georgia. She was the recipient of a United State Public Health Grant while at MCG. Ms. Hendrix practiced in nursing service at Emory University hospital, Northside hospital, medical college of Georgia hospital, The Cleckley Thigpin Psychiatric Clinic at University hospital in Augusta.
The Henry Phipps psychiatric clinic at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Md. Ms. Hendrix was Director of Nursing Services at Parkwood hospital in 1966. She returned to Jackson co. when her parents retired in 1978, she worked several years at Northeast Ga. Medical Center where she had begun her career as a new graduate nurse.
She loved every area of nursing, but the last 25 years were spent in Psychiatric-mental health in which she was board certified. She was elected to "Who's Who of American Nursing" in 1986.
Ms. Hendrix is survived by a nephew and niece, Scott Kinney and Nan McNeal, both of Talmo and a great nephew and great niece, Dew Brock of Dawsonville and Maggie Brock of Talmo and several Cousins.
